Social Toxicity Through Adolescence and Social Media
As a college professor, I was thrown at the forefront of the social media war between the students and the real world. I understand that the term "war" in relation to children and social media is very strong but literally struggles to save the minds of our young teenagers. I was at college when Facebook and MySpace were recently released into the world, so I had a constant picture of how things have progressed over time. Today, students leave Facebook domains to simply resort to other social media, such as instant chat. By developing smart phones, it is extremely easy for a young child to be flooded in the world unfortunately filled with adult material. The introduction of smart phones and social media into our everyday life has created a catastrophic situation.
As a teacher, I have the opportunity to be exposed to students who use a lot of social media. Listening to the students' conversations, I can not think how socially negative behaviors these children know, compared to what they knew at that age. How often do we hear in the media about a child who committed suicide because of cyber-harassment because he set a sensitive image of himself on the social media site? I realize that suicide is an extreme example, so let's think about it. It has already been proven that children who are currently using some kind of social media device do not learn and / or lose any interpersonal skills. Today's adolescence does not know how to communicate with adults and between themselves in the real world. Lack of interpersonal skills will destroy the child once in a lifetime. How many times have you visited a restaurant and family or a group of friends preparing for dinner. No one in the group is talking to them because their heads are buried in the smartphone. As I see, if you do, you may eat it yourself or eat it at home.
I'm not trying to condemn these technologies. I use Facebook to stay in touch with my family. What I am trying to communicate is the need for some kind of parental regulation by the father and mother, the phones and the social networks here to stay, to fight against it as parents, teachers, we have to look for alternatives for these devices to provide them with their purpose would make our lives better.
